Biography

Yoonjung Lee is a Baltimore-based Korean composer whose music connects with and reinterprets the everyday mundanity. She explores contemporary concert music interdisciplinary collaboration, and sonic poetics. Her works reveal an energetic yet thoughtful approach, grounded in a belief that beauty can emerge from simplicity.

Yoonjung’s work has premiered by international ensembles and orchestras, including the Peabody Symphony Orchestra, Parker Quartet, Jeju International Wind Orchestra, and Sejong Symphonic Orchestra. She was recognized by New Jersey State Senator Loretta Weinberg for her contribution to cultural exchange and the liberation Day memorial event.

As the founder and co-director of Synesthesia Spectrum, a Maryland-based collaborative project, she brings together contemporary Asian artists to create works that bridge cultures through sound and visual art.

Yoonjung is currently pursuing her Doctor of Musical Arts degree in composition at the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University, studying with Felipe Lara and Sky Macklay, where she also earned her master’s degree in composition. She completed her bachelor’s degree in composition at Kookmin University, where she studied with Ju-hwan Yu and received both academic excellence and performance scholarships. With over a decade of experience in composition, theory, and performance, Yoonjung continues to deepen her craft through steady practice and study. Her work reflects a dedication to clarity, curiosity, and the ongoing pursuit of artistry.

작곡가 이윤정은 일상적 소재를 신선한 시각으로 접근해 자신만의 음악세계를 구축하며, 미국을 중심으로 유럽과 한국에서 활발히 활동하고 있다. 미국 Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Parker Quartet, Peabody Symphony Orchestra 등 여러 오케스트라 및 앙상블과 협업하고, New York International Composition Competition 1위를 비롯해 제주국제관악제, 세종심포닉밴드, 한국 피아노듀오협회 등 콩쿨 우승 및 입상했다. 그의 작품은 뉴욕 카네기 홀, 프랑스 Chateau de Fontainebleau, 핀란드 Viitasaari Theatre 등 작품이 초연되었다. 뉴저지 상원의원 Loretta Weinberg로 부터 국가문화교류에 기여한 공로로 표창장을 받았으며, 메릴랜드 예술가 협업 프로젝트인 ‘Synesthesia Spectrum’의 창립자이자 기획자로서 메릴랜드 주 아시아 현대 예술가를 조명하는데 힘쓰고 있다. Georg Friedrich Haas, Francois Paris, Gaussin Allain 등 으로부터 마스터 클래스를 받고, Felipe Lara, Sky Macklay, 유주환을 사사했다. 국민대학교 작곡과 졸업 후, 피바디음대에서 작곡과 석사학위를 마쳤다. 현재는 존스홉킨스대학교 피바디음대에서 음악이론 및 Professional Study 조교로 근무하며 박사과정 중이다.

Composer Yoonjung Lee builds her own musical world by approaching everyday subjects from a fresh perspective. She is actively engaged in her work across the United States, Europe, and Korea. She has collaborated with various orchestras and ensembles including the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Parker Quartet, and Peabody Symphony Orchestra. She won first prize at the New York International Composition Competition and received awards at the Jeju International Wind Ensemble Festival, the Sejong Symphonic Band Competition, and the Korean Piano Duo Association Competition. Her works have been premiered at Carnegie Hall in New York, Château de Fontainebleau in France, and Viitasaari Theatre in Finland. She was recognized by New Jersey State Senator Loretta Weinberg for her contribution to cultural exchange. As the founder and artistic director of the Maryland-based collaborative project “Synesthesia Spectrum,” she is dedicated to highlighting contemporary Asian artists. She is currently pursuing her doctoral studies at the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University, where she also works as a music theory assistant and professional study assistant.
